Convent of Sisters of Mercy, now office. Late C18, altered mid
C19, with wing of c1860 by Edward Welby Pugin. Brick with stone
dressings; slate roofs. Late Georgian style block extended by
c1860 Gothic-style range. C18 part of 3 storeys; 3-window
range. 1st floor sill band; mid C19 cogged brick cornice and
gable with slot to 2nd and 3rd bays. Windows have rubbed brick
flat arches and 12-pane sashes, but mid C19 four-pane sashes
to 2nd floor. Round-headed entrance to right has Doric
aedicule, fanlight, and 6-panel door. Similar 4-window return
to St John's Square, some blocked windows and 2 mid C19
gables. c1860 range to right of 3 storeys and 5 gabled bays
articulated by offset buttresses: ground floor has
segmental-headed stone-mullioned windows of 3 lights with
shouldered lintels and transom: 1st floor has 2-light pointed
windows with plate tracery and transom: 2nd floor has cusped
lancets; 2 lateral stacks corbelled out between 2nd/3rd and
4th /5th bays with corbelled caps. Right return has canted
porch between buttresses, entrance with side lights and
overlight, half-glazed door. Rear similar.
INTERIOR of C18 part has stair with stick balusters and open
string; moulded cornices and panelled doors.
