Former National School and attached yard wall and railings

(Formerly listed as Former National School and attached yard wall and railings, CHURCH PLACE (West side))

II
National school. 1865 datestone. Slatestone rubble walls, some slatehanging; steep dry Delabole slate roofs with large lateral brick stacks, alternate plain and crested ridge tiles. Irregular E-shaped plan. Gothic Revival style. Single storey (over basement at west end); nearly symmetrical 1:2:1:2:1-bay south front with original windows; three-light traceried windows to projecting gable-ended bays; three stepped lancets to projecting central half-hipped lobby wing; two cross windows to each bay between with single light to basement on left; central inscription: "THE FEAR OF THE LORD IS THE BEGINNING OF KNOWLEDGE"; and set back at far right a three-light window to lean-to. Pointed entrance doorway with original planked door to right-hand return of lobby wing. Irregular two-window east entrance front has pointed central doorway with original planked door with large scrolled iron strap hinges; gable set back on right with central quatrefoil over cinquefoil-traceried two-light windows; inscription over windows "YE ARE THE CHILDREN OF GOD BY FAITH IN JESUS".

Irregular five-window west front has gable on left with three shouldered lights over two carriage doorways within pointed arches; two lancets on the right over three lancets the right-hand one enlarged to create doorway; central inscription: "LET NO CORRUPT COMMUNICATION PROCEED OUT OF YOUR MOUTH". Irregular four-window rear has cross window with inscription central to windows: "THOU GOD BLESS ME"; basement doorway on the right with two-light window on its left and mid-floor opening on its right.

INTERIOR where inspected appears to retain most of the original features including panelled doors; exposed straight arch braces to roof structure and some folding screens (rare surviving examples).

SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: adjoining at right-angles left of front is yard wall with granite copings to iron railings and central gateway to nine granite steps down.

An architecturally competent example, clearly influenced by Ecclesiological examples by such as William White or GE Street.
