House, now 2 dwellings. C16 or C17 and early C19.
MATERIALS: coursed and squared Ham Hill stone, slate roof with
stepped stone coping and rendered stacks to gable ends and
left-of-centre of ridge.
PLAN: 3-unit through-passage plan with rear right wing. The
right-hand range and the rear wing are now another dwelling
called Vine House.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with attics; 4-window range. Windows are
C19. The first floor has flat gauged stone arches over 2 tall
3-light casements to the left and wooden lintels to horned
6/6-pane sashes to the right. The ground floor has an 8/8-pane
sash to the far left, a large C20 replaced 3-light leaded
casement to inside left and a c1840 doorcase with
key-patterned tops to panelled pilasters and a moulded
cornice; the door has 5-panels, one horizontal to the middle,
all with C19 bolection moulding and raised panels with cut-out
corners; ground-floor windows to the right. The rear wing is
trapezoid with the gable end canted to the shape of the lane
to the rear.
INTERIOR: the room to the left has a chamfered axial beam; the
C19 staircase to the rear left is closed string with stick
balusters, stepped and swept pine rail and turned newel; the
wall to the right of the door is 2 metres thick with a C20
fireplace in the central room, probably a former open
fireplace; this room has oak floorboards, an early C19 reeded
cornice and elliptical arches flanking the fireplace. The door
to the attic stairs at the left end is C17 with H hinges, the
winding stairs and attic floorboards are oak; the plastered
and rounded top of the ridge stack remains; early C18 small
square hatch giving onto the eaves space has one raised and
fielded panel; the wide front door has raised and fielded
panelling to the back and could be remodelled early C18. The
rear right wing has a stone-flagged floor and a chamfered
cross beam.
