Description

BRISTOL

ST5773NW COLLEGE ROAD, Clifton
901-1/2/831 (North East side)
04/03/77 Clifton College, South African War
Memorial

GV II*

War memorial. 1904. By sculptor Alfred Drury. Limestone ashlar
and bronze figure. Gothic Revival-style plinth. A square
plinth has angle buttresses into pinnacles, linked by swept
labels with crockets and finials, over bronze panels, to a
panelled top with a cornice, and an armoured standing figure
holding a sword and shield. A very fine example, overlooking
the cricket pitch and exemplifying the patriotic and chivalric
spirit of the C19 public school movement. Chivalry played an
important part in the school's code since John Percival came
from Rugby to be its first headmaster in 1862.
