BARROW IN FURNESS
SD27SW ABBEY ROAD
708-1/4/20 Jubilee Bridge
II
Bridge. c1887. Rock-faced red sandstone with ashlar dressings
and brick-lined soffit. Single span carrying road over course
of Dane Gill Beck. Abutment piers flank segmental arch of 2
chamfered orders with hoodmould. Snecked walling in spandrels
beneath ashlar offsets and parapet pierced by trefoils; blind
central trefoil with insignia. Abutment piers terminate in
parapet as rectangular dies with pyramidal caps. Wing walls
curve out and down and stop at small stumps. Abbey Road was
widened and realigned at this point prior to 1895 (OS map) and
the bridge must commemorate Queen Victoria's golden jubilee of
1887.
