Description

NORTH MOLTON THE SQUARE (east side),
SS 7229-7329
18/201 Castle Hill
-
GV II
House, now partly shop. Probably mid C18, altered in the mid to late C19, and
further altered in the late C20. Rendered over dressed sandstone, with C20 asbestos-
slate roof, gable-ended to left and half-hipped to right. Stack rebuilt in C20
brick.
Plan and development: C18 two-room central-entrance plan, with central entrance
passage and former coach house incorporated in left-hand end. Axial stack to right-
hand room, backing onto entrance passage. Shop inserted to left of entrance in the
C19. Shop altered, building rendered, windows mostly replaced and roof altered in
the C20. Two storeys.
Exterior: House with symmetrical 5-bay front; first-floor 12-pane glazing bar sashes
(20 replacements probably similar pattern to former C18 sashes) and ground-floor 16-
pane glazing bar sashes with segmental heads flanking doorway (right-hand one is C20
replacement). Fenestration of right-hand ground-floor bay probably also altered at
some time, with small C20 twelve-pane glazing bar sash to right, replacing a doorway
(doorway probably a C19 insertion). C20 shopfront in left-hand bay. Central
probably C19 door with 3 raised and fielded upper panels and one panel below, 3 part
rectangular overlight and C19 bracketed gabled porch with shaped barge boards.
Former coach house to left with tall first floor C18 boxed 15-pane glazing bar sash
(6-panes to upper leaf and 9-panes to lower leaf) and pair of large ground-floor
boarded double doors.
Interior: Much altered in C19 and C20. C18 door with 2 raised and fielded panels
between entrance passage and right-hand ground-floor room. Two C19 staircases at
rear with rectangular-section stick balusters.
