ST 77 NE TORMARTON C.P. WEST LITTLETON ROAD, West Littleton (west side) 6/299 Church of St. James G.V. II

Parish church. C13 origin (bellcote and niche over south doorway), remainder rebuilt 1855 by T.H. Wyatt. Coursed limestone rubble with stone dressings and quoins, Cotswold stone tiled roofs with raised coped verges and kneelers and cross finials east and west. Nave, chancel, south porch and north vestry. Perpendicular style windows. 3-bay nave has tall 3-light west window with hood mould, angle buttresses, 2 smaller 2-light windows to north and weathered buttresses, small vestry attached to north east with pitched roof and pointed arched chamfered surround to door, stack above rising from verge; to south, similar 2-light window to left and 3-light window with flat head and hood mould, trefoil heads to lights, to right; large stone bellcote with pyramidal roof and cockerel weathervane. Gabled south porch has pointed arched opening in surround of 2 hollow-chamfered orders, small trefoil headed window with leaded lights to right; inner door has 4-centred arch, C19 door with decorative strap hinges, hollow-chamfered Perpendicular style crocketed and pinnacled niche above with 3 mask corbels and image; common rafter roof with collars. Chancel has 2-light east window with trefoil heads, quatrefoil and hood mould, vestry attached to north, 2-light smaller window (as at east) to south. Interior: 4-bay nave has arched-brace and collar roof with wooden brackets and stone corbels under arched- braces; chamfered heads to windows, hollow-chamfered head to door. Pointed chancel arch with chamfered inner arch, 3-bay chancel has ceiled roof with moulded ribs, small pointed arched door to north vestry. Fittings: C19 font, pulpit and pews. Royal Arms over south door. Monuments in nave: marble monument with sculptured female figure and urn in perspective, to Sarah Ann Hillier, 1819, by Tyley of Bristol; coloured marble tablet with draped urn and festoons, to Edith Osborne, 1782, by Tyley of Colerne; marble tablet with raised pedimented inscription panel, to Frances Osborne, 1822, by Tyley of Bristol.
