House and forge, subdivided into 3 dwellings. Circa C15 south crosswing; circa early C16 hall and north crosswing; remodelled and extended circa 1600; extended again in circa mid C17; forge wing dates from C17 to C19. Plastered and weatherboarded timber frame. Plain tile roofs with gabled ends. Brick axial stacks. Plan: H-shaped; S crosswing occupied by The Forge, hall contains Forge Cottage and N crosswing is Horseshoe Cottage. S crosswing is independent of and predates early C16 open hall and high end N crosswing. In circa 1600 hall was floored, house reroofed, stacks inserted between hall and N crosswing and on S side of S crosswing, crosswings extended at rear and stair tower added at rear of hall. In circa mid C17 another crosswing was built on S side of S crosswing and forge wing at rear dates from C17 to C19. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 5-window front. Jettied and gabled crosswings to left and right and third weatherboarded crosswing on left. 2, 3 and 4-light C19 and C20 casements; C19 8 and 20-pane sashes on ground floor and original doorway to left of centre. C20 garage and wing set back on right. S side has c19 16-pane sashes and C20 casements; forge to left (W) has circa C18 iron casements with leaded panes and plank doors. Gabled at rear; right-hand gable has exposed timber-framing and circa C18 4- light casement. Interior: Front room of original cross-wing (The Forge) has fragment of fine late C16 wall painting depicting man, woman and dog, part of a larger scheme which may still exist behind later paint (shadow of Royal Arms on back wall). Room above has vase of flowers stencilled upside down on wall. Chamfered ceiling beams with cyma and hollow step stops and some exposed joists. Some exposed wall framing. N wing (Horseshoe Cottage) has square crown-post on cambered tie-beam and 1 brace to collar-purlin. Circa 1600 replacement side purlin roofs. Stairs at rear of hall (Forge Cottage) has C17 octagonal newel with finial and stairs at rear of S crosswing (The Forge) has C17 newel with small ball finial. C17 panelled doors at foot of stairs at rear of N crosswing (Horseshoe Cottage). Forge in rear SW wing has 2 hearths and bellows in narrow bellows room bay. House, now three properties in a c.1500 hall-house, extended in C16 and C17. Plastered and timber frame, weatherboarded on S. Steep pitched old tile roofs. 2 storeys. 3 gable ends to street. Original hall has modern door and windows. Projecting N gable end with jettied 1st floor was cross wing. Modern leaded casements. Interior has exposed framing and crown post roof on cambered tie beam. Smaller S projection with jettied gable is later C16. Ground floor, 10/10, sash window and 1st floor, 4- light, C19, leaded casement. S gable end is 2 block range of C17. Symmetrical S entrance elevation has hooded door, flanked on E by Ground and 1st floor, 8/8, sash windows and on W by modern casements. Rear block with weatherboarded Ground floor, plastered and battened 1st floor with C19 leaded casements. Further weatherboarded single storey extension to W. Modern 2 storey extension on N of Horseshoe Cottage.
