Description

ST ISSEY LITTLE PETHERICK
SW 97 SW
4/227 Little Petherick Village Hall and
attached caretaker's cottage

GV II

Village Hall and caretaker's cottage. 1907 (datestone), probably for Athelstan
Riley. Partly rendered, constructed of concrete blocks with brick dressings. Rag
slate roof with sprocketted eaves and gable ends.
Plan: Rectangular plan village hall with small house attached on right hand (east)
side for caretaker.
Exterior: Front, south elevation of single storey with slate roof continued down
over a deep verandah supported on 2 wooden posts. The windows within the verandah
are original timber mullions with diagonal glazing bars and there is an a full
dormer above with a raking roof and an 8-light mullion window. The left hand gable
end has well carved bargeboards of C15 character and attached on the right hand
gable end is a 2 storey caretaker's cottage. Between the hall and the cottage an
axial chimney stack is constructed of concrete blocks with brick dressings.
Caretaker's cottage to right is of 2 storey with a gable end to front; ovolo-moulded
timber 4-light mullion window on ground floor and mullion and transom on first.
There is a small carved figure of St Petroc in a niche in the apex of the gable.
Interior: Not inspected although the hall contains a fine carved chimney-piece.
Athelstan Riley became patron of the Church of St Petroc Minor in the early C20 and
was a particularly influential figure in parochial affairs.
