9/28 Garden walls and gateways about 15 metres south of the Manor House 17.9.52 G.V. I

Garden walls and gateways. Early C17. Limestone rubble and freestone with stone dressings. Walls about 65 metres long along south and returned about 15 metres to north, about 4 metres high, stepped to left, with weathered coping. Fine central Renaissance style archway with engaged square Roman Doric columns with banded rustication rising from plinths with diamond mouldings, cornice, triglyph and rosette frieze upper cornice, all broken forward over columns, surmounted by 2 floriated urns and central enriched coat of arms of Sir Robert Gunning of 1678 (urns and arms placed later), masks and scroll work to each side of coat of arms. Central round-headed archway with voussoirs and pilaster with similar capital to each side, double doors with 4 raised panels, frieze and radial carving in upper section; semi circular steps in front of archway. Rear of archway has no rustication, plain pilasters rising from similar plinths, plainer moulded cornice, triglyph and rosette frieze, upper cornice, arms and urns as on front; chamfered 4-centred arch to door surround, door plain at rear.
