Bank, now offices. 1876. By John Gibson. For the National
Provincial Bank. Now the offices of the Northumbria Probation
Service. Sandstone ashlar with granite plinth; Welsh slate
roof. Right return to Bedford Street.
3 storeys, 6x5 windows. Palazzo style. Rusticated masonry
except for orders. Ground floor has round-headed openings;
steps up to 4-panel door with overlight in keyed corniced
architrave in left set-back bay and to double 6-panel door in
right end bay under shell-carved head with jewelled key to
architrave. Similar heads to ground floor windows. Ground
floor entablature supports giant order: square end pilasters
with fluted necking, the others elaborately carved Ionic
attached columns, framing first-floor keyed sashes and moulded
aprons to second-floor round-headed windows in enriched hollow
reveals. Long jewelled brackets on entablature support top
dentilled cornice. Low pitched hipped roof has corniced
chimneys at rear and side.
