Description

ESKDALESIDE-CUM-UGGLEBARNBY COACH ROAD NZ8607-8707 (north-west side,off) Sleights 17/50 Esk Hall 6.10.69 II Small country house. Early-mid C18; remodelled and extended early C19; further alteration c.1870. Probably for Richard Burdett; subsequent alterations for the Coates and Corner families. Herringbone-tooled sandstone on chamfered plinth. Extensions of tooled sandstone. Stone slate roof to main house and slate roof to extension wing. Central stairhall plan, two rooms deep; early C19 service wing added at right; later C19 front porch and rear alterations. Entrance front: 2- storey- and-attic centre bay between 2-storey projecting, canted bays, linked by 1-storey pilastered porch; 2-storey, 2-window wing at right. Central panelled door in porch beneath keyed segment-arched hood on moulded brackets. Tall narrow flanking sashes beneath keyed round arches. Raised oval panels within the arches contain low-relief monograms of Edward Corner. Moulded sill and impost bands. Keyed Venetian window with sashes on first floor above porch. Attic window is square sash with plain lintel and sill. Flanking bays have tripartite large-pane sashes on both floors. Wing windows are 12-pane sashes with tooled sills and lintels. Moulded eaves cornice beneath plain parapet with flat coping runs across entire front, broken back over main house centre bay. End stacks to both ranges of double-span main roof; hipped roof to wing. Garden front: 2-storeys, 4-bays, right end bay cross-gabled. All windows are C19 and C20. Cavetto moulded eaves course. Coped gables and plain kneelers. Left and right returns: coped parapet, raked up and flattened in centre to disguise double-span roof. Interior. Open-string, dogleg staircase with shaped treadends, stick balusters and moulded handrail, wreathed around newel at foot. Staircase rises to attic where landing rail re-uses turned balusters with square knops. Similar balusters re-used in subsidiary staircase in wing. Staircase divided from entrance hall by wide segmental arch on panelled pilasters. On first floor, both rear rooms retain bolection-moulded overmantel panelling.
