GV II
Formerly known as: Nos.5 AND 7 RECTORY LANE East Horndon.
Pair of attached cottages, now one house. C17/18, extended and
altered in C20. Timber-framed, plastered and weatherboarded,
roofed with straw thatch. Main range facing NW with external
stack at right end and single-storey lean-to extension beyond,
roofed with handmade red clay pantiles. Extension to left in
similar style, and to left rear, c1980, roofed with C20 red
clay pantiles.
One storey with attics. Only one C20 casement to front, and 2
old plain boarded and ledged doors, possibly original.
Weatherboarded dado. All other windows are C20 casements, 2
large gabled dormers to rear, and a similar dormer in the left
extension. 2 plain boarded and ledged doors to rear, of which
one is in the lean-to extension at right. INTERIOR: inside the
front door of No.5, at right, is an unusual wooden screen,
quadrant in plan, of boards nailed to curved ribs, a rare
feature meriting special care. Rebated elm floorboards. Deeds
from 1858 in the possession of the owners. Shown in Chapman
and Andre's map of 1777. The plain front elevation makes an
important contribution to the quality of this building,
meriting careful conservation.
