House with shop below. Early C16, c1800 and C19. Timber-framed
and plastered and partly exposed, also gault brick. Roof
hipped and slated. 3 storey, rectangular plan with small
reduction in width on W side at rear.
Front, N elevation: ground floor, full width early C20 shop
windows, plate glass above tiled dwarf wall, glazed doorway.
First and second floor of 2-window range, sashes with glazing
bars, moulded architraves, first floor 3x4 panes, second floor
3x3 panes. Second floor plastered, first floor has exposed
timber framing of regular studding with 4 blocked frieze
window of 3 lights each, roll and hollow moulded mullion bars.
These are in a continuous line broken by 2 longer window
apertures in which present sash windows are set. Peg evidence
shows the former site of low-set sills for 2 windows,
originally of tripartite frieze type. Also, cuts for windows
intermediate in date between the medieval and those extant. A
C19 grey brick stack set back on W side. E side elevation to
Market Passage: system on frontage continued, C19 shop once
continued whole length of range but now S end windows
boarded-in, adjacent fully glazed door. Second floor plastered
and blank. First floor, exposed timber framing less complete
than on front, two 3x4 paned windows similar to N front, one
to S is C20 renewal. Heavy central principal storey post with
traces of tension braces each side. N end, jowled post also
with tension brace. N of centre, blocked medieval 3-light
window with moulded mullions.
Rear, S elevation: irregular, C19 brick walling. Ground floor,
C19 3-cant bay window with slate roof and sashes, also,
segment headed doorway with C19 door of 6 recessed panels.
First floor, 3 segment headed windows, one has C19 sashes,
other 2 C20 double casements. Second floor, one C19 sash
window, glazing bars, 3x3 panes and one small C20 casement.
INTERIOR: ground floor rebuilt for shop, all C20. First floor,
principal framing timbers exposed, posts, plates and
tie-beams. At rear, behind brick wall are jowled end posts and
centre post chamfered each side down to high stop suggesting
site of window either side. A lamb's tongue chamfer stop on
the W post suggests a later phase than the front range and the
minor inset in the plan on the W side may denote a building
break. Second floor, clearly raised over the original wall
head at first floor level with hip rafters at all corners.
