Description

ILMINSTER

ST3614 SILVER STREET 1939-1/7/115 (South side) 29/07/76 Entrance gates, piers and railings to north of Greenfylde School

GV II

Gates, piers and railings. 1878. Ham Hill stone plinth and piers, cast-iron railings and gates. Parallel to street, canted in towards gate piers and gates to right of centre. Piers, also to the sides, are square-section, each with a low plinth and a string course below the cap; this is a truncated pyramid above truncated gables with recessed quatrefoils to each side. The railings have 5 panels to the left and 3 to the right, supported by hexagonal cast-iron columns with pyramidal tops. Each panel is a quatrefoil fixed by the foils to top and bottom, and has diagonal struts to the corners. The lower part of the gates has this motif, with bands of smaller quatrefoils above and below; the tops have vertical railings with Gothic ornament.
