House. 1750s. For Elizabeth Aston.
Brick with ashlar dressings; hipped tile roof with panelled
brick stacks.
PLAN: double-depth plan with L-plan service wing.
EXTERIOR: early Georgian style. North-east, entrance, front of
2 storeys, 5-window range. Quoins and top frieze with
entablature blocks to angles. Entrance has Tuscan
distyle-in-antis porch with frieze and cornice, overlight and
side lights to 6-fielded-panel door. C19 canted bay window to
left of entrance, and 2 windows with rubbed brick flat arches
and 6/9-pane sashes to right; windows to 1st floor have rubbed
brick flat arches over 9-pane sashes. C18 rainwater head and
downspout.
Single-storey service wing to right has 3 windows with
6/9-pane sashes and one to return of wing, which has garage
door and attached square outhouse. Returns have similar
windows and hipped dormers, that to left has early C19
bow-fronted conservatory with hipped roof and small-paned
glazing.
Garden front has central full-height bow with 3 windows to
each floor. Stone-coped plinth cut by tall windows, 1st floor
sill band and top cornice with stone-coped brick parapet with
urns to angles and balustrade to bow with 4 urns; quoins.
Windows have eared architraves, those to ground floor of bow
with 8-pane sashes and 6/9-pane sashes to flanking windows;
those to 1st floor with 12-pane sashes.
INTERIOR: open-well staircase has twisted balusters and
moulded handrail; rooms have cornices, one with modillioned
cornice and Adam-style fireplace with coloured marbles,
another with Adam-style pine fireplace.
Although set apart from other buildings of interest in the
area, the house forms an important element in the landscape,
especially in the view from the Cathedral and Stowe Pool.
