Farmhouse. c1600, with mid-C19 additions. Timber-framed with wattle-and- daub infill, sandstone plinth and stacks, brick shafts and brick C19 additions, tiled roofs. U-plan, central block of three framed bays with through-passage, aligned north/south facing east; cross-wings of three framed bays extend to west; large central stack and further central stack to south wing. Two storeys, attic and cellar. East front: irregular fenestration mainly with latticed leading, 2-light casement window in gable of south wing with centrally placed similar 3-light window below and further single light to right, large restored 8-light mullioned and transomed window to ground floor, 2-light stone mullioned window lights cellar; two 3-light casement windows to central block, left window placed at lower level directly above gabled C19 porch with panelled door, further ledged doorway to right; similar 2-light casement window in gable of north wing with further 2-light C20 glazing bar casement window to first floor with gabled porch to doorway to right and external stone stair extending from lower left to upper right, 2-light casement window to left of stair on ground floor. Framing: largely complete and uniform, six panels from sill to wall-plate. Interior contains fine moulded ceiling beams, the ceiling of the main room in south wing being of particular note, large open fireplace to central block and further fireplace with C17 surround and inserted C19 cast iron range to south wing; collar and tie-beam trusses with two struts to collar. North wing converted to hop room with adjoining circular kiln to west. This building is situated on a moated site and is a fine example of its type and date. Although named Walsopthorne it is also known locally as "Wassington".
