NORTON SUBCOURSE CHURCH ROAD TM 49 NW 7/114 Church of St. Mary 5.9.60 - I

Parish church. Fabric generally early C14 with earlier tower base. Flint, partly rendered, with limestone dressings. Slate roof continuous over nave and chancel. West tower, nave and chancel. Round west tower not co-axial with main body of church; possibly pre-Conquest. Late C13 tall bell openings with 'Y' tracery, much restored. Lancets at lower levels, those below bell stage have continuous roll-moulding. Renewed lancet west window; blocked opening above with ogee hood mould and crocket-finial. Red brick tower parapet. Nave and chancel in one with good early C14 fenestration, generally 2-light windows with cusped Y-tracery, some with ogee heads to lights. C14 south doorway and priests door in south wall of chancel. Chancel has continuous cill band; stepping up to raised cill of south-east window. Staged buttresses with stone dressings, diagonal buttresses to east wall. 5-light reticulated east window, hood mould with headstops. Blocked niche with cusped head above east window. Staged buttress on north chancel wall at junction with nave; adjoining brick projection for rood stairs. C14 north doorway blocked in flintwork: hoodmould with head stops. Interior: nave and chancel ceilings plastered. Windows have internal hoodmoulds on headstops; chancel window reveals have attached shafts. North and south doors have shallow segmental heads with hoods and head stops. Blocked high-level opening to tower in west wall of nave, pointed arch with plain imposts. Tower arch pointed, reduced and elliptical on east face. North wall of nave has three irregular niches set between windows. Rood stair at north-east corner of nave with doorway and tall opening to loft. Piscina at south-east corner of nave. Dado moulding in nave plaster. C18 tie beam at junction of nave and chancel, supported on Ionic pilasters. Continuous cill band around chancel interior. C14 double piscina in south-east corner of chancel with clustered shafts, ogee and cusped Y-tracery head under a crocketted ogee head mould on headstops. Triple sedilia with similar detailing; crocketted hoods on ball flower and head stops. North-east chancel window blocked. Low tomb recess in noth chancel wall with ogee crocketted head. South wall of nave, a wall monument to Edward Wigg, d.1825. Font, C13, on two octagonal risers: tapered octagonal bowl with shallow arcading on octagonal stem and eight shafts, all in Purbeck marble.
