Cottage. Late C15 with later additions and alterations. Timber framed,
partly of cruck construction, with rendered and painted brick infill
on rendered plinth; straw thatch roof. 2 cruck-framed bays, formerly
open to roof, floored over at different periods in C17 and stack built
to right of right cruck truss. One storey and attic. Framing: square
panels, 2 from cill to wall-plate with truncated cruck truss visible
to left gable end. This has straight collar and remains of king strut.
C19 leaded casement to left and C19 fixed-light window to left of plank
door to right. C19 gabled eaves dormer to centre and integral red brick
end stack to right. Small leaded casement to back wall. Single-storey
rendered hip-roofed (machine tile) addition to left is probably C19.
Interior. Both ground-floor rooms have flat heavy joists, intersecting
at timber framed cross wall (square panels). Another timber framed
wall running at right-angles to left in front of present staircase.
Large inglenook fireplace (possibly replacing smoke-hood) has inset cup-
board with plank door to right. Small cupboard with butterfly hinges
to front wall in angle with cross wall. Cruck trusses, visible on both
floors, have long curving braces to single purlins with mortice for missing
brace to rear left corner. Original ridge piece and collar and yoke
well preserved to right truss.
