Description

SW 62 NE SITHNEY

5/268 Gate piers and courtyard wall
10.7.57 adjoining Truthall and Truthall
House
GV II*

Gate piers and flanking walls. C17. Granite ashlar with dressed granite plinth and
copings. Rubble at rear.
Plan: 2 square-on-plan gate piers with ashlar-fronted wall at either side, fronting a
roughly rectangular courtyard and the gateway is almost aligned with the entrance
doorway of the 1642 range of Truthall qv. The courtyard is cobbled and slopes down
away from the gateway; along the middle of the courtyard is a dressed granite flagged
path of rounded-on-plan stones which reach as far as a granite kerb at right angles
to the doorway of the through passage of Truthall qv. The courtyard wall adjoins and
appears to be integral with (at the rear) the corner of Truthall House qv. and the
right hand wall adjoins the corner of Truthall at the higher end of the hall with a
straight joint between.
The walls each have a plinth and round-top copings; the gate piers have moulded
plinths, plain ashlar shafts which rise higher than the walls and moulded cornices to
ramped pyramidal caps surmounted by ball finials.
These fine walls and gate piers are complete and form a most prominant feature. The
way that they link to the house and relate to the courtyard helps to explain the plan
development of the house.
