11/65 Newton Farmhouse, with attached
- wall, gateway and cart shed
II

Farmhouse, with attached wall, gateway and cart shed. Probably late C17 - early C17
origin; gateway dated 1665; addition of circa C18, and alterations of C19 and C20.
Slatestone and granite rubble, with granite dressings; partly rendered. Roof has
front slope in asbestos slate, rear slope in slate, with ridge tiles and gable ends;
gable end stacks, to left in granite ashlar with cornice, with right with rubble
shaft.
Plan: 2-room plan, with wide central cross passage. Smaller room at higher level to
right, heated by gable end stack, probably parlour; larger room to left, a
half/kitchen, also heated by gable end stack. Stair tower to rear of passage, which
may be of the original build. To the rear right, there is an integral outshut of
single storey, unheated, used as a dairy. Probably in circa 1665; a 2-storey wing of
2-room plan was added to the front of the lower end to left; this does not appear to
have been heated. The wing encloses a front courtyard, which is enclosed along the
front by a rubble, wall granite gateway dated 1665 set in the centre. Probably in
the late C18 or early C19, an open-fronted cart shed was attached to the front left
of the wall. Probably circa C19, a rear wing of 2 storeys was added to the rear
left, as a kitchen; this has 2 gable ends, and is heated by a gable end stack.
Exterior: 2 storeys, asymmetrical. 3-window front. The passage doorway has a plain
chamfered granite surround, half-glazed door with plain granite lintel and end with
plain lintel; to left a 2-light casement with plain granite lintel and end left 3-
light granite casement, chamfered, with 2-pane lights. First floor has two 2-light
granite casements to left and centre, of 8-panes each with L hinges; 2-light 8-pane
wooden casement with L hinges to right. Attached to front left, the lower 2-storeys
wing, with two 2-light chamfered granite casements at first floor, one to left
blocked, one to right with stooling for mullion only. Ground floor has plain granite
lintel remaining over blocked door. At the left side, the front wing has 2 doors and
one loading door at upper level. Gable end of the main range has granite string
course. The right side has external weathered stack. There is a loft over the dairy
outshut, with small 4-pane light. At the rear, the dairy has 4-light granite
casement, with mullions removed, chamfered, with smaller C20 casement inserted; over
the dairy, the roof forms a catslide with the main range. Dairy has door and C20 3-
light casement. Small single storey C20 addition to rear of dairy. The rear kitchen
wing has 2 gable ends, with external stack to the gable end to left, with oven at
base of stack. Ground and first floor right C20 window, first floor to left has C20
window. The rear gable ends are rendered; they enclose the rear stair tower.
Interior: The room to front left, the hall/kitchen, lies slate floor and end fireplace
with roughly hewn granite jambs and flat chamfered lintel. Roughly chamfered cross
beams with no stops. The window is hollow-chamfered on the inside. The stair tower
to the rear of the passage has a C19 dog-leg stair. At first floor the feet of the
principal rafters are visible; these are roughly hewn, without chamfers, 9 bays in
the main range.
Wall, gateway and cart shed The wall and gateway extend from the front of the front
wing across the whole length of the house; slatestone rubble wall, about 1½ metres
high. Set in the wall, opposite the front door of the house, a granite gateway, with
3-centred arch, chamfered and stopped, with recessed spandrels with raised carved
hearts and date 1665, with square hood mould over. To front left of the wall,
attached open-fronted cart shed, with 4-bay front, roughly hewn granite monolith
piers along the front; slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends.
