At the head of the deep valley that carries the Porthtowan stream stands the fine pumping engine house of Wheal Ellen with an unusual castellated stack. The mine produced 9,000 tons of copper in the period 1845-61. A brief attempt to reopen the mine in 1907 was unsuccessful.
