NY 33 SE MUNGRISDALE Mosedale

3/28 Middle Farm Cottage

House formerly part of Middle Farmhouse. Dated and inscribed over interior
doorway T.M. M.M. 1670 (Thomas & Mary Mark) with extension dated and inscribed
over window B.S.M. (16) 95 (Benjamin & Sarah Mark); C20 alterations. Mixed
cobble and slate rubble, partly whitewashed. Graduated greenslate roof with
stone chimney stacks that in centre C17 with slate cowling. 2 storeys, 2 bays
with set-back 3-bay extension at right-angles of common roof line. Oldest part
has 2 chamfered stone-mullioned windows, another with mullion removed and a
single-light window. End window has architrave enclosing date and inscription.
Extension projects slightly giving angle of 2 half gables with side plank door
in alternate-block surround. Facade has C20 windows in red sandstone surrounds
with chamfered-surround windows above, their mullions removed. Small fire
window to right and segmental archway to left, now used as garage. Evening
Mail, 15 June 1976, illustrates the building and suggests this was the home of
one of General Wade's surveyors during the Highland roadbuilding.
