ST 78 NW YATE

4/257 Yate Court Farmhouse

Farmhouse. Early C16, possibly incorporating earlier parts, but much altered.
Rendered; double Roman tiled roof; rubble stacks. Cross passage with hall and
service end to north and probably the parlour to south. 2 storeys and attics.
Slightly higher range to the south: two 2-light casement and one cross window.
To the north: two C20, 2-, 3- and 4-light casements; studded plank door to left
with 4-centred head under a later hood; the right hand bay is recessed. C20
single storey lean-to at right. At the north end is an attached 2 storey dairy
and cheese loft. A stair turret projects on the west elevation. Interior:
large stop chamfered beams; winder stair; the hall chamber has a timber-
framed screen wall with a moulded door surround which has a 4-centred head; tie
and collar beam trusses with slots for windbraces (removed). Part of an
important manorial complex, dating from the late C13 and which belonged to the
Berkeley family and the Crown.
