Small country house now subdivided. Probably circa 1720-30 for Thomas Bromsall (Bedfordshire Record Office, X336), with various C19 additions and alterations. Red brick. Hipped roofs, partly of clay tile, partly of slate. Earlier block to W, with later additions to N, S and E, forming quadrangle around small courtyard. N block of 3 storeys, other blocks of 2 storeys. W elevation: 6 window facade, giving symmetrical impression, with central bay projecting slightly, RH 2 window range of same width as LH 3 window range. Central bay ground floor has 6 moulded panel front door with side-lights and rectangular fanlight, within stone Doric porch. First floor Palladian window with stone surround. LH and RH bays, probably raised from one to 2 storeys at later date, have sash windows with glazing bars, mostly under slightly cambered gauged brick heads. LH bay has tripartite sash to ground floor RH. RH bay has full-length sash to RH ground floor, surmounted by first floor dummy window. Stone cornice and stone coped parapet. S elevation: 3:4:3 window ranges, mostly of later date. Stone coped parapet continues from main front. Cornice is of moulded brick. Brick first floor bands to central and RH ranges. "Payne" incised in brick surround of LH ground floor window of E block. Blunham House was at one time the house of Sir Peter Payne (1763-1843) a Bedfordshire reformer of the early C19.
