THORNBURY CASTLE STREET 4/10 ST 6390 (east side) 21.9.52. No 52, The Chantry (formerly listed as The Chantry) II

Late C16/early C17, altered and extended in C18 and further extended in 1970's. Elevation to Castle Street: Rendered pantiled roofs behind parapet and moulded cornice. Rendered and brick stacks. Main block: 2 storeys and attic in coped gable end. 2 glazing bar sashes in original southern part (plus 2 cusped arch-headed windows in gable); 1 in C18 extension to south (2 on ground floor). Setback 2 storey, 2 window wing with tripped double Roman tile, further to south is C20. South/garden elevation: formerly main facade. 2 storeys. 3 windows, glazing bar sashes and 2-light mullion and transom to east. C19 conservatory on ground floor to right which is entered through 4-centred arch stone doorway with quatrefoil and dagger decoration in spandrels, all under hood mould. (Possibly reused from Thornbury Castle). Interior Roof of original (north) part - collar beam trusses with two rows of curved windbraces. First floor, north-east room: ogee moulded beam; panelled room of small square panels; open scroll catches on windows. C18 wing to south has fielded panel doors under 4-centre arch lintels. Ground floor, north-east room: panelled with small square panels; moulded beams; 4 centred-arch, moulded stone fireplace with good inlaid oak Jacobean surround and overmantel. North-west room: elaborate double ogee, moulded beams and wall plate.
