Description

Clevedon
1.
ST47SW WALTON CASTLE
2/10 A Walton Castle
II GV

Castle keep house. 1615-20 for Lord Poulett, mainly rebuilt late C20. Rubble,
rendered, stone dressings, asphalt roofs (not inspected). An octagonal 'keep' in 3
floors and cellar, with 2 storey rectangular porch attached on north side, and
polygonal stair turret to south-east. One or 2-light casements in stone and stone
surrounds, some with transoms, and one 3-light at ground floor. Early panelled and
battened pair of doors, brought from elsewhere inside porch, up 5 stone steps. Plinth
mould, two string courses, cornice and blocking course. Steps to cellar level
adjoining stair turret. An unusual castle 'folly' on a very prominent site over-
looking the Bristol Channel, for long abandoned and ruined, restructured and again made
habitable in the late C20. Most of the work is of this period, but the keep retains
some historic value in conjunction with the surrounding curtain walls and towers (q.v.)
