BRIGHOUSE WAKEFIELD ROAD, KIRKLEES
SE 12 SE (south side)

Clifton
4/201 House to N.E. of Kirklees
Mill,

G.V. II

Millers house, and warehouse. Mid C17. Hammer-dressed stone, stone slate roof.
2 storeys. Gabled south front has quoins, capped gable with kneelers. C19
doorway with monolithic jambs broken into hoodmould with straight returns which
runs over sashed window of 20 panes to either side, these formerly were
chamfered mullioned windows of 2 lights. Over doorway is one small 2-light
chamfered mullioned window with lowered sill (lacks mullion) and similar small
window under gable both with hoodmoulds. That this is not entirely a domestic
building is indicated by the broad blind wall to this 1st floor front gable
which has only a small central window to what may formerly have been a warehouse
access to this floor gained by back-to-earth rear which has 1st floor large C17
doorway with straight lintel, composite jambs and simple chamfered surround.
Return walls present a long range with a few inserted windows, one appears to be
original with heavy lintel. Attached to left hand front is single storey
outbuilding. Attached to right hand front is single cell 2-storey mid C18
cottage with doorway with monolithic jambs and 3-light flat faced mullioned
window with same over and gabled stack. Interior of this cottage has side to
staircase with decorative flat balusters enclosed to ground floor by panelling
with broad raised and fielded panels.
