Covered water tank. Probably late C18 - early C19 for Sir John or
Sir William Ingilby with C19 and C20 alterations. Coursed squared
gritstone, corrugated asbestos roof. A single-storey building approximately
3 x 5 metres built partly below ground, on a hill slope. Quoins. A small
segmental-arched doorway in the east gable end breaks the line of a
projecting band at eaves level; there is a rectagular opening above.
Interior. The building is divided into 2 halves by a 2-bay arcade on Tuscan
columns supporting a solid plastered cross-wall on segmental arches. The
building is full of water to a depth of approximately 2 metres, just below
the capitals, and there is said to be a submerged flight of stone steps
against the west gable wall. The building is lined with puddled clay.
Relined with black polythene and electric pumping machinery installed at
time of resurvey. The building is traditionally the site of a monk's
bathing house belonging to Fountains Abbey; the present structure appears to
be contemporary with the rebuilding work at Ripley Castle and village and it
is still the water supply. Sir Thomas Ingilby, personal communication.
