Antonio Pellegrini's painting, 'The fall of Phaeton', which had decorated the underside of the dome since 1712, was destroyed in a fire in the 1940’s. The dome was eventually rebuilt in 1962 and the painting recreated by Scott Medd, a Canadian artist.
