A Grade II Listed Building in Eye, Suffolk

bakehouse and brewery barn, Eye abbey

Uploader's Comments

Now known to have contained two enormous brewery vats, this building of early C16th brick was truncated at some time, the north blocking wall being made up of carved stone from the abbey church. Terracotta cusping remains in a central niche on the east face.Considering the small number of monks remaining here by the C16th, the semi-industrial scale of production is indicative of the economic rather than religious nature of such monasteries by this date.
