House c.1680 probably by Hugh May for his nephew Thomas, altered in mid C18 and
recased in 1792 by James Watt for Queen Charlotte. Stucco faced 3 storey central block of 7 bays with lower wings, enlarged early C19 with bow fronted pavilions linked to main block by one storey portico links with entablatures. Glazing bar sashes. Projecting eaves cornice hipped slate roof. The Tuscan colonnade to ground floor of main block was originally open, now glazed. Doubled columned porte cochere to east entrance front. Good staircase dividing into 2 return flights with wrought iron balustrade. Delicately painted room by Mary Moser with flower garlands on walls and ceiling. 1st floor gallery runs through house from front to back with Pompeian decoration possibly executed by George III's daughter Princess Elizabeth.
