Description

LANCHESTER B6296 (South side)
NZ 14 NE and NZ 14 NW
5 and 6/68 Hollinside Terrace
(Nos. 1 - 18
consecutive)

GV II

Terrace of miners' cottages. Dated 1892 in gables. Irregular courses of
squared sandstone with quoins and ashlar dressings; Welsh slate roof with stone
gable copings and grey brick chimneys.

2 storeys, 34 bays; each house 2 bays, except the end houses which have one
front gabled bay and entrances in returns. Paired 2-centred arches with
voussoirs on alternate-block jambs to doors, and fanlights, some with intersecting
glazing bars; similar glazing bars and surrounds to most ground-floor windows
and to first-floor windows breaking eaves under small gables. Large gables
over end bays contain date panels. Banded ridge chimneys.

Some altered glazing. One C20 porch not of interest.

A rare survival of a relatively unspoilt colliery row.
