Lodge house. Mid C19. For the Bedford Estate. Stucco with
rusticated quoins. Single storey. Main facade with 3-window
canted bay of architraved sashes and square-headed entrance
with panelled door to left. Dentil cornice and blocking course
continuing around the building. Over the bay, Bedford family
coat of arms in circular plaque supported by scrolled
consoles. Returns with 2 architraved sashes and garden front
with similar bay to main facade. INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the lodge house was originally flanked by
gates to bar undesirable traffic from the square. The square
was built piecemeal from 1845-1859; the gates were removed in
1893.
