HORSMONDEN MAIDSTONE ROAD TQ 74 SW (east side) 1/75 Castlemaine Farm Cottage GV II

House. C16 or earlier altered and extended c.1802. Timber framed and part exposed with red brick infill to left, otherwise clad with red brick and tile hanging with plain tiled roof. Possible hall house origin. Two storeys and garret on plinth with half-hipped roof and stack to centre left. Two 3 light wooden comments on each floor and additional 2 light casement to right on ground floor. Boarded doer to centre left in framed surround. Catslide outshot to rear left and single storey hipped wing to rear right, dated: T M 1802. The old nine for the farm was Badmonden, in reference (Bedesmen) to a cell of Beaulieu Abbey, Normandy, by 1414 transferred to Rochester Cathedral and suppressed 1540, (Hasted, vol.V,p.319).
