Twenty-three years after Richard Norman Shaw's main church was built, and all but his belfry plans completed, John Oldrid Scott submitted the winning design for a tower. John Oldrid Scott (1841–1913) was the son of Sir George Gilbert Scott, and uncle of Sir Giles Gilbert Scott - both prominent architects of the day.
The foundation stone was laid by Lady Willis on 31st August, 1899, and it was completed in eighteen months. With the addition of a clock and tenor bell it cost £6,000 and was dedicated by Rt Rev Randall Davidson, Bishop of Winchester (later Archbishop of Canterbury), on 5th February, 1901.
