House, formerly a farmhouse. Probably a late C17 remodelling of an earlier
house and with C19 alterations. colourwashed stone rubble. Slate roof
with gabled ends. Gable end and rear lateral stacks with later rendered
shafts.
Plan: 3 room plan with the entrance probably originally into a through
passage between the left hand and centre rooms. The left hand room was
probably the parlour, its gable end stack may replace a projecting lateral
stack at the back; alternatively the projection at the rear may have
contained a newel stair. The central room to the right of the passage
probably the hall/kitchen has a lateral stack at the back with an integral
stair turret at perhaps a smoking chamber. The small room at the right end
has a gable end stack. This small room may have originally been the inner
room of a traditional 3-room and through passage plan re-orientated the
lower left end room becoming the parlour. There is now a doorway giving
direct access into the right hand 'inner' room through a C19 porch at the
front. there is an outshut at the right end and a small late C20 outshut
behind the left hand end room.
Exterior: storeys. Asymmetrical 4-window range. 2 and 3-light
casements mostly C20. the 2 first floor 3-light casements to the right are
C19 and there is a small single light late C18 or early C19 window with
leaded panes to the right of the left hand doorway. Most of the windows
have slate cills. the doorway to the left of centre has a C20 porch with a
hipped slate roof. At the right hand end of the front a larger C19 hipped-
roof lean-to porch/outshut.
Rear elevation: to the left a slightly projecting gable, its left half
projecting a little more and having a 2 light casement. Over the gable
there is the rendered shaft of the stack. A small casement under the eaves
to the left of centre. to the right of centre a projection which may be a
truncated lateral stack or a stair turret, to the right of which is a small
C20 outshut.
Interior: Only the centre room (hall) and the right hand room were briefly
inspected. The hall has roughly chamfered cross-beams with run-out stops
and a rear lateral fireplace with a timber lintel chamfered with run-out
stops and stone rubble jambs.
Roof: The roof structure was not inspected.
