Fern Cottage and Rock Cottage
2 adjoining cottages. C17, Fern Cottage extended probably in C18 and Rock Cottage
in C19. Rendered stone and cob. Slate roofs, asbestos slate to Fern Cottage.
Shared axial rubble stack, rebuilt rear lateral brick stack to Fern Cottage.
Original core of each cottage consists of a single room to each side of shared
stack. Fern Cottage was extended, possibly in C18 by addition of a 1 1/2 room 2
storey range set slightly at an angle to the original, with the principal room
heated by the rear stack. In C19 a right-angled front wing was added at left end
of Rock Cottage, forming an overall L-shaped plan.
2 storeys. Fern Cottage has 3 window range, 2 light casements, 2 panes per light.
Ground floor has 2 light horizontal sliding sash 6 panes per light to left and 4
over 8 paned sash to right of gabled slate roof to timber porch with shaped
bargeboards and decorative pendant and lozenge motifs to the pilasters. 4 panelled
inner door. Front wing of Rock Cottage has two 16 paned sashes over 12 paned sash
to right of plank door. Outshut to rear of both cottages.
Interiors: Both cottages retain some C19 joinery, including 2 panelled doors to
Fern Cottage. No access to roofspace but feet of trusses suggest the late C17 or
C18 roof structure is mainly intact.
