Farmhouse. C17 or earlier origins with a later C17 or early C18 1 room plan addition at the left (west) end. Colourwashed rendered cob and stone; asbestos slate roof, gabled at ends (thatched until at least 1960s, old list description); projecting right end stack, rear right lateral stack, left end stack. Plan: The present arrangement is a single depth plan, south-facing, 4 rooms wide with an entrance into a passage between the 2 right end rooms, facing a wide straight run stair. A thick cross wall between the 2 left hand rooms and a hip in the roof structure (information from owner) proves that the left hand kitchen with late C17/early C18 features, is an addition. The 3 right hand rooms may have originated as a 3 room and through or cross passage plan, lower end to the right, the hall heated by the rear lateral stack, with a later stair inserted in the passage. The inner room has been subdivided axially and there are no exposed carpentry details or open fireplaces to these rooms although more conclusive evidence of the dating may survive behind plaster. Exterior: 2 storeys. Long asymmetrical 5 window front with a C19 or C20 gabled porch with a C19 panelled front door to right of centre and C19 small-pane 3-light timber casements. There is a second door directly into the left end kichen; rear left outshut. Interior: The 2 right hand rooms have plastered-over crossbeams and 1950s chimney pieces, possibly concealing C17 carpentry. The stair is the full width of the entrance passage with a good pair of C18 Chinese Chippendale dog gates with HL hinges at the bottom and a C19 stair window with margin glazing and coloured glass. The kitchen, at the left end has chamfered crossbeam with runout stops and a partly- blocked large open fireplace with a bread oven and a timber lintel concealed behind wall plaster. Roof: Not inspected at time of survey but may be of interest. The survival of the hipped end of the old house suggests that a pre C18 roof structure survives. An attractive traditional farmhouse.
