Entrance arches and gates. c1836-7 by Sir William Tite. Pale
brick and yellow stone. Large central buttressed brick archway
with stone 4-centred vehicle entrance arch, moulded and hollow
chamfered with spandrels containing shields bearing the arms
of the dioceses of Canterbury and Winchester; parapet cornice
rises to central peak above escutcheon with riband inscribed
"South Metropolitan Cemetery Incorporated AD MDCCCXXXVI".
Large, Gothic style cast iron double carriage gates with ogee
centre panels, similar to boundary railings. To right, a
smaller pedestrian 4-centred arch gateway above which a carved
crown and scroll inscribed "Deus Deo" in a stepped pediment,
and on the inner side, the date 1837; Gothic style cast iron
gate.

1836 by Sir William Tite. Large central Tudor archway of pale brick with stone
dressings. Cornice rising to central peak above escutcheon with name (South Metropolitan
Cemetery) in riband and date. Arch of stone, moulded and hollow chamfered with
carved spandrels. Large ornamental cast iron double carriage gates. Smaller
arch at right with pedestrian entrance.
