6/86 Lilac Cottage, Holly Cottage and Pilgrim Cottage

3 cottages, former farmhouse and is said to have been an inn once. Mid-late C16 with C17 improvements. Plastered cob on stone rubble footings; stone stacks, one with its original granite ashlar chimney shaft, the others topped with C20 brick; thatch roof. Plan and development: 3 cottages set back from the road and facing north-west. All have 2-room plans with C20 service outshots to rear. They appear to have been created from a 3 or 4-room-and-through-passage plan house, but it has been much- altered and the original layout is difficult to ascertain. Lilac Cottage is at the left (north-eastern) end and appears to occupy the service end. Holly Cottage in the centre apparently occupies the former passage and hall. The putative passage is now blocked both ends and the present door is to the hall. Unusually the hall has an axial stack at the upper end backing onto the former inner room. This inner room, a parlour with a projecting front lateral stack and the right end room with a projecting end stack now make up Pilgrim Cottage. The hall (Holly Cottage) was probably once open to the roof and floored in the mid C17. The parlour in Pilgrim Cottage is the result of an early or mid C17 refurbishment and the right end room (same cottage) is probably an C18 or C19 addition. All cottages are 2 storeys. Exterior: overall 6-window front (3 to Lilac Cottage, 2 to Holly Cottage and 1 to Pilgrim Cottage) of various late C19 and C20 casements with glazing bars, the first floor window of Pilgrim cottage is a gabled half dormer. All 3 cottages have roughly central doorways, all containing C20 doors, the outer 2 with contemporary gabled porches. The roof is continuous across all 3 cottages and is half-hipped to left and hipped to right. To rear of Pilgrim Cottage at first floor level the inner room chamber has a C17 oak-framed window still with 2 ovolo-moulded mullions and 1 light contains rectangular panes of leaded glass. Interior: the putative service end (Lilac Cottage) was not available for inspection at the time of this survey. The hall (Holly Cottage) contains a large, probably original, granite ashlar fireplace and alongside to left, under the present stairs, there is an oak Tudor arch, now disused and blocked but still containing its original plank door. The crossbeam is soffit-chamfered with runout stops; probably mid C17 The putative hall-passage partition has been replaced in brick but at first floor level the original large-framed crosswall remains. 2-bay hall roof is carried on a large side-pegged jointed cruck roof truss. The roofspace is inaccessible but the roof is thought to be clear. The inner room parlour (Pilgrim Cottage) has a richly-moulded crossbeam with step stops and moulded joists. The fireplace is granite ashlar with a plain surround. The roof over this section is inaccessible and the truss is boxed into a partition. The end room has a roughly-chamfered crossbeam and the fireplace has been rebuilt.
