Description

SX 89 NW CREDITON HAMLETS

7/70 Eastacott

II

Farmhouse. Circa 1830-40, possibly earlier, remodelled early C19. Flemish bond
brick on rubble footings, brick stacks; slate roof. L-shaped building. Gable-
ended main block facing south has a 3-room plan with door and stairhall west (left)
of centre, and kitchen wing to rear of west end. Massive lateral stack projecting
to rear of central room, another to rear of west room and lateral stack to kitchen.
2 storeys. Regular 4-window front with gauged brick flat arches to all windows.
Front door left of centre has 2 long and 2 short panels with fluted borders, beaded
centre line and cast iron knocker. Rectangular overlight with floating lozenge
pattern. Timber approximately Doric doorcase with 2 slender fluted columns on
plinth blocks supported entablature with cornice of exagerated projection. All
windows are tripartite sashes without horns, but with much old glass; the centre
sashes vary in size; 12 panes at either end, 16 to centre and 8 over the door. A
change of brickwork at the top suggests that the eaves detail has been altered or
the roof replaced later in C19. Interior not inspected. The layout appears to
follow a traditional C16-C17 layout and includes an otherwise unnecessary massive
projecting lateral hall stack.
