Description

BEAFORD CHURCH STREET, Beaford
SS 5515
20/43 Sunny-View
-
GV II

Smithy, now cottage. C18, altered in the early to mid C20. Rendered cob, on
rendered plinth. Thatched roof, gable-ended to left and hipped to right. Brick
stacks.
Plan and development: Two-room central-entrance plan with pair of lateral stacks to
rear. Corner site, ground falls to right. Formerly a blacksmiths shop with only
doorway and left-hand ground-floor window to front. Further windows inserted when
the building was turned into a cottage, probably between the First and Second World
Wars. The smithy probably already had a first floor, if only in a part of it. The
right-hand stack is probably original and the left-hand stack is probably an
insertion. Two-storeys.
Exterior: Asymmetrical fenestration. Four windows to first floor and 2 to ground
floor; mostly early C20 three-light wooden casements. Doorway off-centre to left
with C20 six-panelled door and late C20 glazed gabled porch. Ground-floor early C20
three-light wooden casement in right-hand return front.
Interior not inspected.
An old photograph shows the building before conversion (Beaford Archive).
