Smardale Hall, Smardale

Uploader's Comments

Smardale Hall (formerly Smerdale hall), a grade II fortified tower house, is the nucleus of Smardale hamlet, positioned to the rear of a cluster of newly built dwellings. Smardale is 2 miles east south east of Kirkby Stephen and 1 mile south east of Crosby Garrett. Although Smardale Hall was originally erected in the 1300s. The current Hall and buildings were replaced in the 1400s to 1500s. The south part of the hall was converted from the once great hall to farm buildings. The east wing, of which the tower house was part, has been demolished. The current hall is the former west wing. It has a conically roofed round tower at each of its four corners, giving the appearance of Scottish baronial architecture.
