Library now art centre and theatre. Dated 1904 over original entrance.
Rock-faced calciferous sandstone with red sandstone quoins, eaves cornice with
modillions, all on large red sandstone plinth. Hipped graduated greenslate roof
with red sandstone ashlar chimney stacks. 2 storeys, 7 bays, with flanking
single-storey, 4-bay wings. 2-storey theatre adjoins to left forming overall
L-shape. Double panelled doors in eared architrave under console-bracketed
hood. Window left of entrance is in a blocked dated doorway. Sash windows with
glazing bars in red sandstone architraves, those on ground-floor with arched
heads and false keystones. Window over entrance is under large segmental
pediment with Latin inscription. Wings have sash windows in red sandstone
surrounds. Theatre has C20 ground-floor doorways and windows in original
architraves. Principal entrance has alternate-block surround under Venetian
window and gable niche. Left return wall has blocked windows, 2 with round
arches. Roof has prominent lead and stucco cupola. Rear brick extensions are
not of interest.
