According to an information board by the bridge, Lostwithiel was founded by the Normans, who also built the first bridge here across the River Fowey. First documented in 1280, the original bridge had nine arches. The foundations of the four most westerly ones are said to be under North Street. The bridge was rebuilt in the 15th century.
