Description

ST TUDY CHURCHTOWN, St Tudy
SX 0676-0776
8/200 Spare Hill House

GV II

Farmhouse. Circa mid C17, extended in C18 and in early to mid C19. Rendered and
painted stone rubble and cob. Rag slate roof with gable ends. Projecting stone
rubble end stack on left with brick shaft. Brick end stack incorporated as axial
stack when the house was extended to right.
Plan: 2-room and through passage plan; the kitchen probably originally on the left
heated by a large projecting stack and the parlour to right heated by an end stack.
In circa C18, narrow service rooms were added across the rear elevaton whilst
maintaining the through passage. In circa early to mid C19, an extension of one-room
plan was added on the right hand gable end; later this extension became part of the
adjoining property to south west. Circa early to mid C19 lean-to outshot added on
left hand gable end.
Exterior: 2-storeys. Regular 3:1 window front. Symmetrical circa C17 range was
probably remodelled in the late C18 and maintains the late C18 sashes. Central C19
door with ornate glazed C19 porch with various glazing bar patterns. 20-pane sashes
to right and left with incised keyblocks above. First floor has 2 20-pane sashes
flanking a central 16-pane sash. Extension to right has a C20 door on ground floor
and 4-pane sash above. C19 lean-to outshot on left hand gable end.
Interior: C19 timber screens flanking through passage which retains the slate flag
floor. Interior not completely accessible.
