Description

BOYTON
SX 39 SW
5/4 House 70 metres to west of
- Talastone

GV II

House. Circa mid C17, probably extended in C19. Rendered and painted stone rubble
and cob. Thatched roof with gable end on left and hipped end on right. Rendered
brick end stack on left and axial stack to right of centre.
Plan: Originally probably a 2-room and cross passage plan heated by end stacks.
Possibly in the C18 or C19 the house was extended to the right by the addition of
third room heated by a fireplace in the earlier right hand end stack. The exact date
of this third room is uncertain because although there appears to be a straight joint
on the front elevation between the 2 ranges, the floor joists in the extension are
fairly heavy and some of the cross beams are chamfered.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Regular 2-window front. Earlier range on left has C20 2-light
casements in blocked door opening with similar casement to left and door to right.
Two 2-light casements on first floor. To right, two C20 2-light casements on ground
floor of later range.
Interior: C20 fireplace heating left hand room and Rayburn stove heating right hand
room. Fairly heavy chamfered ceiling beams with simple run-out stops and fairly
roughly cut ceiling beams in right hand room.
First floor not inspected.
