Description

ALTARNUN
SX 27 NW
7/31 Disused farmhouse in yard of
- Tregune

II

Farmhouse, now used as a shippon and store. Probably early C17, extended with
shippon in C19. Roughly coursed granite stone. Slate roof with gable end on left
and hipped end on right returning with rear right wing which has a corrugated
asbestos roof.
Plan: Original plan uncertain. The house is now used as a shippon and many of the
internal domestic features, including the fireplaces, have been blocked up and
covered over. The front range has a 3-room and cross or through passage plan with
entrance to right of centre; there are no partitions on either side of the putative
passage and there is a straight joint on the front elevation directly to the left of
the entrance. A stone rubble cross wall divides the central and left hand rooms.
Beyond this left hand room, the house continues with a further one-room plan range
which has a ramp up to the first floor; the walls have been partly rebuilt in
concrete block and the date of this range is uncertain. There is a one-room plan
wing to the rear of the lower end on right which appears to be a circa C18 extension
and a circa C19 shippon which was added in an outshut across the rear of the putative
hall and inner room.
Exterior: Two storeys. Asymmetrical 2-window front. Entrance to right of centre
with C17 hollow chamfered square headed granite frame with straight cut stops. To
left, opening probably originally the hall window and stable-type door beyond with
chamfered granite lintel. 2-light mullion window lighting possible inner room with
ramp to far left. Window opening to right. First floor with plank door on far left,
2-light mullion window and wide opening above site of putative hall window. Wing to
rear left has a circa C17 chamfered granite square headed doorframe. Ventilation
slits and drainage holes to rear of C19 shippon in outshut to rear left.
Interior: Floor joists largely replaced. The rear wing has large roughly cut cross
beams with rectangular section floor joists. There are several pieces of dressed
granite which have been reset near the entrance to the main range.
