Hotel and Public House. C15 or earlier, C16 and C17. Timber framed and
plastered, two storeys with 3 storey crosswing at N end. Peg tile roofs, hipped
at S end, gabled at front of crosswing and hipped at rear and with 3 lean-to's
in peg tiles at the rear. Front shows 3 storey crosswing at N with jettied
ground floor on heavy shaped brackets. Similar brackets support the scalloped
bargeboards. Ground floor has canted bay window with part hipped slate roof
and iron leaded light casements. Main block has off-centre late C18 doorcase
with simple bracket and scroll supported flat hood, 2 similar to above, canted
bay windows and a recess C18 bench seat with flared surround. Off-centre small
red brick stack in front roof slope and N end wall stack. C20 flat roofed rear
extension. The interior reveals 3 builds, the 3 storey crosswing of c.1620,
one bay to the S of a probable open hall and a 3 bay mid C16 block of 'long
wall jetty' form. This had one large first floor chamber, a service or parlour
bay on the ground floor, and a 2 bay hall with a part the hearth bay.
Crownpost roof over this block partly remains as do all the tie beam arched
braces. The 3 storey crosswing has original attic space with unusual aisle-like
roof form. Part of probable fire hood survives on ground floor. RCHM 28.
